Bing Places for Bay Area Small Businesses: A Quick Setup Guide

When I ask Bay Area business owners whether they have checked their Bing listing, the usual answer is a laugh and "Does anyone use Bing?" Some people do. Bing is the default search engine in Microsoft Edge and on many Windows computers, and Microsoft's tools draw on Bing data too. Office workers in San Jose or Pleasanton who search on a work laptop may be seeing Bing results without thinking about it.

You do not need to spend much time on Bing. But a claimed, accurate listing is a small effort with real benefits, and it helps keep your business details consistent across the web.

What Bing Places is

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free tool for managing how your business appears in Bing search and Bing Maps. It works a lot like Google Business Profile. You can control:

  • Your business name, address, and phone number

  • Your website link

  • Hours

  • Categories

  • Photos

  • A short description

The fastest way to set it up

If you already have a Google Business Profile, Bing Places offers an option to import your business information from Google. This can save you a lot of typing. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Go to Bing Places for Business and sign in with a Microsoft account. I recommend using a business email so the listing is not tied to one employee.

  2. Search for your business to see if a listing already exists, or choose to import from Google.

  3. Review all the imported details carefully. Imports sometimes bring over old hours or categories.

  4. Complete verification. Bing offers a few verification options, and the ones available to you depend on your business.

If you are a service business that travels to customers, check how your address will be displayed. Just like on Google, you usually do not want your home address public.

Details to double check

After setup, look closely at these:

  • Business name. Use your real business name with no extra keywords.

  • Phone number. Match the number on your website and Google profile.

  • Website. Make sure it points to your current site, using the secure https version.

  • Hours. Update them for holidays, just like you would on Google.

  • Categories. Choose the ones that best describe what you do.

Why consistency matters more than Bing itself

Search engines and directories share data with each other. If your old phone number lives on in Bing, it can spread to other sites and confuse customers. Keeping Bing accurate is part of a bigger habit of keeping your information the same everywhere. My usual list for Bay Area businesses includes:

  1. Google Business Profile

  2. Apple Business Connect

  3. Bing Places

  4. Yelp

  5. Facebook

  6. Industry directories, such as Houzz for home services

Keep it updated without extra work

Here is a simple routine. Any time you change something important, such as your hours, phone number, or address, update Google first, then Apple, then Bing, then Yelp, all on the same day. Put a reminder on your calendar twice a year to check all of them, even if nothing has changed. Listings sometimes get edited by the public or by data providers.

Add photos and a helpful description

Once your basic details are correct, take a few more minutes to make the listing look complete. Upload a logo, a photo of your storefront or vehicle, and a few photos of your work or products. Then write a short description that says what you do, who you serve, and which Bay Area cities you cover. You can reuse much of what you wrote for Google, adjusted slightly so it reads naturally. A complete listing simply looks more trustworthy than a bare one, no matter which search engine someone uses.

Where to start

Today, open Bing.com and search for your business name and city. Look at what comes up. If you see wrong details, or no listing at all, set aside twenty minutes to claim it in Bing Places. If you already have a strong Google profile, the import option makes it quick.

If you would rather have someone handle all of your listings at once, my local marketing services include listing setup and cleanup for Bay Area businesses. Send me a message and I will take a look at how your business shows up across the web.
